Lapland is the area in the far north of Scandinavia and is in the countries of Sweden and Finland. It is a very sparsely populated area famous of course for being known as a home of Father Christmas AKA Santa and Santa Claus.
It is in December that Lapland suddeny becomes very accessible for UK visitors with day trips and short breaks becoming available from airports all over the UK. For Santa Trips at Christmas time look at the Lapland Bargains site.
The largest town in the area is Rovaniemi in Finland. It’s known as a cosmopolitan town as it is both a hub for tourists as well as a trading point. Another claim to fame is that Rovaniemi is home to the world’s most Northerly McDonalds outlet.
Thanks to the northerly location of Lapland, and the lack of development the winter is a great time to see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.
