After 62 years in the air, Cimber Sterling has now given up.

In a sign of the times, the bankruptcy was announced by the company on Facebook.

The board of the airline Cimber Sterling have opened a bankruptcy petition with the Danish court in Sønderborg this morning.
The reason given is that Cimber Sterling’s owners no longer want to support it financially.

All flights are cancelled with immediate effect. Around 600 employees will lose their job. A buy out or rescue of the company has not been completely ruled out, Cimber did fly a number of Denmark domestic routes for SAS. Cimber Sterling, formerly called Cimber Air changed their name when they bought up the remaining parts of the bankrupt airline Sterling Airlines which went bankrupt in October 2006.

About a week ago, on 24th april at an AGM the company approved the board’s proposal to increase the share capital, reduce staff numbers and focus on Nordic countries.

Malmö airport, MMX, the big loser in Ryanair Scandinavian shake-up.
All Ryanair routes to Malmö will cease from November 2007. Other changes announced.

July 19, 2007–Dublin

Higher aviation taxes in Sweden than Denmark and the superb links from Malmö to Copenhagen seem to
have dealt Malmö Sturup airport a killer blow. Ryanair has announced that it will cease services from London and Dublin as well as the routes from Barcelona, Madrid and Marseille.

The loss of all the Malmö routes will be a blow to southern Sweden but mostly to Sturup airport as Malmö is well served by Copenhagen airport which is actually easier to get to from central Malmö due to the fast and frequent train service over the Oresund bridge.

Other changes are the loss of the London to Esjberg link and a switch for Dublin to Stockholm from Vasterås to Skavsta, both of which are a long distance from Stockholm centre. There is a new route from Stansted to Billund which will be a daily service.

Last month Ryanair announced a major expansion at Stockholm Skavsta airport, with 13 new routes to European cities including Liverpool, Berlin and Valencia
